In Ancient Rome, Augurs interpreted the will of the Gods by studying the behavior of birds, a practice known as “taking the auspices.” They used a crooked staff called a “lituus" and sometimes sacred chickens to aid in their prophecies. Wide-ranging decisions, especially those pertaining to war and elections, were made largely based on their divinations.
